Last month The New York Times covered the TDot in a column called 36 Hours in Toronto. The author Danny Lee covered a few bases in downtown and Leslieville then seemed to find all the hipster haunts, like Oddfellows, Sweaty Betty's and Communist's Daughter, too. If you're from New York are you really going to come here for hipster leftovers? Is it just me or can everyone just get over this hipster bullshit already, I mean is that a way to describe a restaurant? You are what you eat right? Not what you sit next to.

Toronto versus Vancouver

About a month ago I packed up my life in Toronto and made the move to Vancouver. I didn't want to be one of those people that lives and dies within a 20km radius from where they were born. I also appreciate that being Canadian means that I have the opportunity to explore and experience several other livable cities in this great country. I chose Vancouver, frankly, because of the mountains and the ocean. So for now solitude will replace socializing as I build a life on the west coast.

One can try not to compare too much - I think it annoys people really - but I'm already finding there are several things about Toronto I miss. [If you're from Vancouver and hate to hear this stuff go back over to 604style and read about the the finds in your great city.]

1) Graffiti. Toronto has so many interesting back-alleys and bridges covered in street art. Vancouver alleys and walls are begging for it. Seriously thinking about designing some stencils to spray over. Something cute or socially motivating?

2) Food prices. Everything costs a fortune in Van. Try and make a cheap pasta and you'll be paying 3 times as much for a basic bag of rotini. Go out (in Kitsilano especially) and you'll be paying about $5 more for plate of Palak Paneer. The food, however, is pretty good in Vancouver. I know Torontonians think they've got that market covered but there is no lack of options for tasty treats.

3) Nightlife. I'd been warned and people in Toronto were right. There are only so many nights I can get so wasted that I no longer care where I am and what music I'm listening to.

4) The weather. Ha! Just joking, Vancouver has been beautiful so far. Don't remember ever having such a dark tan in Toronto by mid-May.

Three Good Things to Start the Week Off Right in the Tdot

Didn't do much this weekend 'cept bummed around Toronto and found a few sweet deals to pass off to the female readers of 416style.

First, while you're reading this, go to the itunes store and pick up either Lily Allen's new album It's Not Me, It's You which just came out last week, or her first album called Alright, Still, especially if you're new to the saucy Brit who busted her way into the industry backed by a huge myspace fan following. Though I do play it often and everywhere, it does seem the perfect album to blare in your car while driving the curvy beach roads up north in the summer. Mark Ronson did a brilliant job producing Alright, Still and giving her a unique sound while she pushes through her own gutsy lyrics. Love that she's got so little to hide. All 11 tracks are only $7 CDN right now.

I spent one sunny day this weekend wandering about the Distillery District. Wonder how the pricey shops will fare during this bust-up in the economy. Seems they're willing to offer a few breaks to buyers. Lileo, a clothing shop which isgreat for browsing and books but usually out of my range has great deals on jeans right now. Brands like Tommy, Goldsign, Joe's and Sass & Bide would usually run you $250-300 at this shop but most of the denim is currently marked down 50%. That's pretty sweet.

From there I went to Queen's Quay near the Guvernment for some groceries and swung into a shop called Joe; it's Loblaws own super cheap clothing label. I've found a great jacket there and a felt laptop bag I got alot of use from. Was wondering if Joe had any goods worth grabbing this time around. Best deal were the socks - stripes, solids and argyle styles, 3 for $6. Best thing is that they're like my fav snowboard socks, with double padding for the feet. I usually pay about $20 a pair for Burton or Volcom snowboard socks so this was a steal. Tried on a few things too, no luck, lots of too short jackets, not for me. Left my Prada shades behind in the changeroom too. Bummer.

1. Since Toronto had a major dump of snow this week which only led to more mess with a typical slushy thaw, I decided I'd give in and get myself some waterproof Sorels (winter boots). Everybody who's got 'em on these days is proudly jumping through puddles while billboards all over the city seem to be looking down on me laughing everytime I get a soaker. I dragged myself down Queen Street from The Bay to Get Outside and all I heard from all the shopkeepers is how every place selling Sorels in the city is out of most sizes, which annoyingly also includes mine.

2. I'm staying at a friend's at Spadina and Queen these days where the wireless is surprisingly spotty. Figured I'd fork out $30 for the month to join Toronto's open wireless network One Zone. Figured it would be good to keep data rates on my iPhone down too. (Everytime I log onto Safari it hooks up to the One Zone site so I always have to play around to bypass it as it is.) Jumping onto Safari I went straight to the site, picked a hanle, filled out all my personal details including credit card info and waited to be registered. Three minutes later a warning typed in red told me that my credit card info was invalid. I typed it in again but no luck. I tried another card and the same thing happened. I did this whole thing again using Firefox but it still wouldn't sign my onto the wireless network. I figured I'd call so they could register me over the phone. Their tech guy told me to clear my computer's cache and try again since he couldn't help me over the phone but that if his solution didn't work it must be that their server is down. Forty minutes wasted and now I've given up using the network at all.

3. Parking has been a nightmare downtown but this I'm used to. I parked in a lot at Spadina and King (Impark) one day for work. I figured I'd get all my work done on time so I paid $13 to park until 6PM. It's only $1 more to stay until 8PM but I didn't see anything keeping me late. Well, 7PM rolls around and I'm still in an edit suite with 3 editors working to complete a project. When I finally make it out to my car I find that Impark has given me a ticket for $39.59 even though all I really owe them is $1. I've got 7 days to pay or it goes up to $68.90, then to a collection agent. Anyone know if Impark really has the authority to make people pay or are they just a bunch of scammers? I figure I'll just mail them a cheque for the buck I owe and see what happens.

4. After the crazy week I'd been having I decided to unwind with some shopping last night and also meet-up with my sister. Bloor Street Diner in Manulife Centre was packed so we headed up to Panorama for a sweet city view. Over half the tables were empty, including some nice spots next to the massive windows but the hostess told us all the tables were booked and we'd have to wait 15mins. We were there for an hour and a half and no one was seated at any of those tables at any point. For some reason it annoyed me even more when the hostess cheerily told us to "have a good night" upon leaving. I wanted to snap back but I figured it'd probably be an awkward wait before the elevator came up.

5. With a brutal windchill making the temperature in Toronto feel close to -40C last weekend there wasn't much to do but stay inside and warm up under the covers. Toronto kids can usually take the cold but not when it's this bad. I drove by City Hall to see a bunch of people enjoying Wintercity at Nathan Philips Square but I was too whimpy to get out and skate with the others. Kind of annoyed I missed the party put on by Dave and Irving from Promise and featuring a great circus act out of the Netherlands. Fortunately they've been asked back this weekend and temperatures are warming to a balmy 4C.

Doc Soup for the Soul - Chris and Don A Love Story

Tonight Doc Soup features the Toronto premiere of "Chris and Don: A Love Story" at the Bloor Cinema. Theirs was a love that spanned 30 years and and a significant generation gap, flourishing in a time when many gay couples felt compelled to keep their own lives and loves under wraps. It also tells the story of two talented artists, writer Christopher Isherwood of Berlin Stories and portrait painter Don Bachardy, who's passion for each other drove the two to greater successes.

If the trailer is any indication, this story will certainly be an emotional and inspiring ride.

AGO's Massive Make-over Revealed Next Weekend

It was July 2005 when I took the picture Massive Change. Big things were underway. The AGO was just closing and the new design was revealed in a small exhibit showcasing some of architect Frank Gehry's more notorious international buildings. Among Gehry's designs there's the Walt Disney Concert Hall in L.A., the Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao, Spain, the most bizarre DZ bank featuring a giant horse head, the brilliant temporary public space at the Serpentine in Hyde Park that I recently visited, and my favourite, MIT's Strata buildings for which Gehry is now being sued.

I didn't have high hopes for AGO's redesign. It was pitched as a glass ice hockey rink suspended over the street. Taking Canadian symbolism too literally makes me mental. I mean, why not just do a maple syrup installation to cover the old building? Fortunately there's little talk of that hockey rink now.

Yesterday I saw some actual photos of the redesign in the Globe and Mail and it surprisingly made me want to cry. The atrium is raw and stunning. Forget futuristic, this is nature on grand scale. Giant cedar timbers curve endlessly. Nothing makes me feel more at home, more Canadian, than being surrounded by our natural elements of stone, wood and water. If he could have spilled a river through the building (like Frank Lloyd Wright's Falling Water) I might have actually cried.

The Globe also features a sneak-peek of next weekend's surprises in a snippet from a documentary called The Collection. Shot using the new high-resolution RED camera, this doc interviews all the major players behind the AGO's new building and yet-to-be unveiled collections.

No one in Canada has had a better art collection than the late Ken Thomson. I remember the days when every major Canadian art auction was trumped by Thomson. Records for the auctions were constantly breaking. My favorite pieces by Lawren Harris were exceeding millions. I knew this man had a vault in downtown Toronto with some incredible tear-worthy pieces. Some friends working on The Collection visited the vault and told me of its riches, I'd pictured something like Aladdin's cave. Now, due to his family's million dollar generousity, all Canadians will be able to revel in something we can call our own and be truly proud of.

If you have an AGO membership you can visit the galleries starting today, everyone else is entitled to free admission all of next weekend.

There's no doubt our society has a major addiction to plastic - and not just the credit card variety. As I look around me at work I see plastic phones, plastic TVs, plastic pens and a plastic calculator and stapler. However, what I don't have on my desk is a plastic water bottle, and I have cut the plastic bag habit by more than half. These are but a few of the small things I can do to curb my own personal addiction to plastic. Fortunately other Torontonians are realizing that we can break this dependence, and filmmakers like Ian Connacher are too.

Tonight, Addicted to Plastic, an intriguing documentary directed by Connacher and edited by my talented friend and co-worker Gad Reichman, plays at the Royal Cinema on College at 7PM as part of the Planet in Focus Film Festival. The film premiered at VIFF to a sold-out audience which included the enviro-guru himself, David Suzuki.

If you too have a predilection for plastic, and a curiosity for where it comes from and where it goes, I think you'll be amazed to see some of the film's images, the most incredible of which is a floating island of plastic waste, double the size of Texas, which bears the elusive name The North Pacific gyre.

As with every election I hear the woes of friends who seem afraid to let the conservatives continue to run this country. The thought makes them want to crawl into a hole and hide for the next 4 years. As usual these friends seem astounded when the conservatives are actually voted in again, as it happened this week. Is Toronto out of touch with the rest of Canada? Or, is it that our Canadian cousins are simply sick of listening to our whiny self-centred opinions?

According to CBC only 26% of Torontonians voted for Harper, a former resident of our city, while his party picked up 38% of the vote across the board. That's a big stretch, and a strange one when one considers that Toronto is very much the economic engine of Canada. It's hard to argue that voting conservatives into power translate into tax cuts, balanced budgets and decreased deficits. Toronto, under Miller, our formerly NDP mayor, is verging on bankruptcy. Wouldn't it help to have some friends in Ottawa? I mean, I hear the whining from all sides - Toronto deserves more of its cut, but if we keep spending (as the NDP is prone to do) can we really keep expecting handouts?

Since we don't seem to care so much about financial stability there must be another story here - and there is. Our cosmopolitan grounding means we see the world through different eyes and because we've seen it all and live with such diversity we place high value on individual freedoms, freedoms that would be lost if the Conservative had won a majority of seats. So, if it's gonna take this city-slicker to keep that from happening maybe Toronto's got the right idea after all and we should happily tell Mr. Harper to hop along.

Can Art Unite A Community?

For years residents and businesses on the Bloor Street strip between Keele and Dundas West have battled over the area's graffiti-covered back-alleys. It started with the "Keele Wall", behind Midas, where friends of mine have been spray-painting for years. The work has evolved but it's always been eye-catching, drawing the attention of subway riders riding the Bloor Street track and other graffiti artists whose work began to spread eastward.

Up until a year ago the alley artwork covered a huge stretch, all the way to the Dundas West subway station. It drew even more attention, from residents who were drawn to the art and others who knew the strip as a landmark. Unfortunately Toronto City Hall was paying attention too. When they decided to get tough with graffiti they decided the art-strewn walls had to go.

Now, selective pieces will be going back up. The Bloor-by-the-Park BIA is bringing businesses, artists and residents together in an event called ComeUnity. Tomorrow between 10AM and 10PM you can watch as the community unites for a little love in the name of art.

It's 6:51 on Monday night and the man from the Billionaire Boys Club, Mister "You're So Beautiful", Pharrell Williams, is checking out sneaks and doing a meet and greet at Livestock on Spadina. My two illustrious gawker friends could only peel themselves away from the window long enough to drop me a line. (Something about Spadina seems to be drawing the attention of some of my favourite hip hop icons lately.) Too far away to get there myself but I'm dying to know what Pharrell's got in his bag.

I like to think I know a great deal about this city but I had no clue about the existence of this building or its place in the history of modern astronomy. Measurements taken at the observatory between 1840 and 1858 contributed to the understanding of sunspots and their effect on magnetic declination, which is the variation between north and true north as one navigates the globe.

A few nights ago I rushed the TIFF film 7915km at Dundas Square's new AMC theatre. Once my friends arrived to hold our spot I was free to wander the square (and run to H&M to grab a jacket to keep me warm on the brisk night). Moving through the public space I was struck by how lonely it felt, despite years of attention from planners and builders. It was filled with empty chairs for an outdoor screening about to begin and glazed PR people pushing Bell's new Samsung Instinct phone from under their glossy tents. While their mobile ads pulsed onto the cold concrete below I heard a conversation from one New Yorker to another tourist about Toronto's new square being an attempt to emmulate Times Square. From the smirk on her face you could tell our efforts were falling flat.

If the goal is indeed to make the space as vibrant as New York's flashy square, or even as frenetic as Shibuya's famous crossing we're going to have to bring it some vitality and originality. Lose the PR people and "just for show" events and let people do the entertaining....DJ's, buskers, choirs, dancers, even naked cowboys or Zanta. Find a way to draw a crowd and shine some real light on the hapless Yonge Street square.

Okay, so I don’t really stalk the stars but I do happen upon the sexy beasts from time to time at hot spots, and chill spots in the city too. In the spirit of Gawker, here's the dish on celebs popping up in the 416, since I know you Toronto kids like your celebrity gossip too.

My dear friend John was at The Beaver on Queen West last night where members of Radiohead were hanging out (interestingly none were drinking). He put the text out to a few friends as they did to their friends and all of a sudden the place was packed. One friend found herself chatting with Thom Yorke and his manager Chris about internet sales of their new album In Rainbows (*see below). While media reports have offered a lacklustre picture of the success of launching the album solely online, frontman Yorke and his manager seemed pleased and revealed that it's been a tremendous success.

Unfortunately I missed the opportunity for geek talk with the band but I did run into Mos Def at Fresh on Spadina one Thursday two weeks ago. Damn, he looked sweet in his flashy aqua blue tee and white cap. Was hoping he'd flash those signature dimples my way but I left him with his crew to enjoy their veggie lunch on the sun-filled patio.

The Toronto Island lighthouse at Gibraltar Point has fascinated me since I stayed at the Island School in grade six. It started with a visit up its cool and winding staircase as we were told about its haunted past from a man who looked like he could've been a ghost himself. Today the dark side of its history will be forgotten as people celebrate at Hanlan's in honour of this, one of the oldest lighthouses on the Great Lakes.

Stay tuned for a special Spook in the City episode dedicated to the scintillating story of how one night of revelry turned to death and despair back at the lighthouse in 1815.

In 2000, I was living the good life in Australia, enjoying a routine which brought me into the water, almost daily, either to surf, sail or scuba dive. Getting into the water was fabulous but getting to the bottom was even better. This growing desire to see what lay beneath the surface pulled me into a small Brisbane bookshop one day. On display was an issue of National Geographic with a shipwreck on the cover, a female figurehead carved into the wooden bow of a ship within its yellow border. A whole new world was opening up to me and this was just the beginning. I hoped one day to see the ship up-close and wondered where in the world it was.

I was astonished to learn the ship lay close to home, in the dark green depths of Lake Ontario. Flipping through the glossy pages, photos and scans revealed amazing detail of TWO battleships, the Hamilton and the Scourge, upright on the lake bed, mostly intact and still waiting for action. Just after midnight on August 8, 1813 these two American naval ships, both which boasted successful assaults on York, now lost their final battle.

Earlier in the day they had prepared to combat the Brits but with no wind and stifled sails neither side could engage the other. The stalemate continued into the night with crew sleeping beside pointed cannons, hoping the next day would bring victory in a war that had lasted for months.

The weather did begin to change, quite drastically however. Large drops began to fall, and crew members awoke to a freak squall lashing lightning over the lake. Wind whipped the ships, tossing the top-heavy schooners over. Water poured through open gun ports leaving little time to react. Sadly the ships slipped away, quickly out of reach of the crew, marking the largest loss of life on the lake during the war.

Sitting at a depth of 300 feet they're too far down for most divers to explore. Though Jacques Cousteau visited the site in 1980, surveys are few and far between, so even if I'm lucky I won't be getting down there any time soon. One weekend last summer I set my course, trying to get as close as possible to the wrecks. With a consistent wind at my back I set sail for Port Dalhousie, just on the other side of Lake Ontario and about 25 nautical miles from Toronto's shore. I'd hoped to see if any other sailors knew the tragic tale and could divulge any long lost secrets. All I'd discovered however is that much of our lake's history has been forgotten and too few people know what lies beneath Lake Ontario's seemingly cold grasp.

Historic Beauty Bluenose II Sails into Toronto Harbour

Canada's most famous ship sailed into Toronto's harbour yesterday to help launch the 2008 Nautical Festival and give a boost to Nova Scotia tourism. The racing schooner first set sail in 1963, following in the lead of its sister ship the Bluenose, built in 1921 and known as the Queen of the North Atlantic. The schooner will be docked at Queens Quay and open to the public until the 23rd.

Walked into Rudsak today with my mind set to drop some serious dough on a slick new leather laptop bag. It's my birthday after all and I owe it to myself. They've got so many beautiful handbags, jackets, shoes and accessories too, in vivid colours like yellow and blue, as well as muted tones of cream, grey, brown and black. Was shocked to see how much they'd dropped their prices, on a whim it seems, anywhere from 20% to 70% off.

I'd had my eye on a luxurious looking italian leather tote in what I like to call winter white but it made more sense to go for my favourite colour since eveything else I buy these days is grey - strange isn't it? That meant the bag I wanted, large enough to slide my 13inch macbook into, went from its usual $240 to $75 dollars! Insane! The shopgirl helping me out was rather shocked herself. I'd never seen prices so low there, neither had she I was led to believe. Either way I walked out a winner, and chances are I'll be back for more - think I'll want a summery canary coloured wallet to complement my carry all.

Doors Always Open at Hindu Mandir

Lines of cars and people stretched endlessly from the door last week at the BAPS Shri Swaminarayan Mandir near Hwy 427 and Finch. All were welcome to come inside and explore the incredible marble and sandstone structure as part of Doors Open in Toronto. Journeying inside, where we were expected to remove all footwear and cover up appropriately, beautiful Hindu percussion rang out. We shuffled shoelessly on the cool marble floor through banquet hall to media room and then finally to the marble temple itself. Inside the intricatively carved mandir no photos were allowed, I would've loved to show you. It seems it was built to showcase the spiritual leaders of the Hindu world. Behind lavish gates inside the temple were life-sized figures made of gold - there to view, worhsip or pay respect to with a donation. Once under the dome I spun around looking at all the hindu gods carved into the ceiling and watched as decorative lights chaged the colour of the shining white room.

The tour finished with a prayer for world peace done by two darling boys who had perfectly memorized the mantra. I left feeling very peaceful, wondering about how I too could be more active in my community and better the world, something the mandir strives for above all else. I also know I'll one day go back to visit, as they made sure we all knew we were welcome to come anytime, day or night - the doors would always be open.

Everyone should be doing their part today to lessen the strain on our environment. Here's one trend I hope to see take off in Toronto - Green Roofs. This photo of mine was taken on the green roof of MEC - Mountain Equipment Coop and was used in Bruce Mau's MASSIVE CHANGE exhibit held in Chicago in 2006.

Some of the environmental benefits of green roofs in an urban setting include:
-reducing stormwater runoff that affects water for drinking and swimming, as well as habitat in local rivers and lakes
-reducing energy consumption by as much as 50%
-reducing the urban heat island effect by lowering the City's temperature and therefore a reduction in cooling costs
-beautifies the City
-creates more natural green spaces in urban areas
-provides more habitat area for wildlife including migratory birds

Hot Docs Heats Up in Toronto

The Hot Docs festival kicked off in Toronto last Thursday with a moving documentary, Air India 182, bringing to life the stories of families touched by the worst act of terror Canadians have ever encountered as a nation.

After this opening weekend the festival buzz is heating up, giving high honours to Football Undercover, a film profiling a Muslim women’s soccer team, as well as Carny, a colourful doc that explores the strong and unusual bonds of one girl on the road.

Cuban Song could be given a miss I’m told. The documentary follows in the tracks of other Cuban docs that show how life and music mesh in Havana, however it lacks the depth and tone set by its cinematic predecessors. Tiger Spirit failed to engage audiences in the story of divided Koreans reuniting for the first time in decades, while Club Native hit home showing the difficult side of life for Mohawk Indians uniting with partners off their reserve. I’ve got my festival pass – 10 films for $90 – but have been caught up preparing for a BBC micro-session on how to approach research for forensics documentaries. Is Comfort Zone Down for the Count?

Toronto party-goers buzzed last weekend with news that the city's longest standing after-hours, Comfort Zone, had been raided by 200 police who'd made 33 arrests, mostly involving illegal narcotics - $30,000 worth. People unlucky enough to be inside the club last weekend were quickly thrown on the ground and handcuffed with plastic teathers. Some admitted (on blogTO) that officers would step on the backs of their necks if they were caught squirming to get comfortable. It seemed like a brutal situation. Police, who called the operation white rabbit, were implored to take action after the recent death of a young man who'd been partying at the Comfort Zone, made his way home to Hamilton, and was found dead from a drug overdose.

The club certainly has its detractors and I haven't been in many years. Back when I was 18 and 19 the after-hours was called Buzz and I was happy to go dance the night away while ignoring all the sketchy people around me. I have a little sister now close to that age, and she could've easily been looking for a place to party with friends when police busted the joint. Out of towners and first timers who were there last weekend certainly learned their lesson.

The big questions was, is CZ going to remain open? It's been a part of the Toronto scene for over 10 years now, with relatively little trouble, except for a sullied reputation. It appears Comfort Zone did open back up, and police were back this morning arresting two kids for peddling drugs. That's some big cahones those boys have.

Will this second series of take-downs be enough for CZ to consider an exit from clubland, or will the spate of arrests convince
the club-owner to emerge from the dark-side to find a new crowd of squeeky-clean clubkids?

Rochdale College Remembered

Most Torontonians in their forties and up remember the social experiment that was Rochdale College, they might even have a good story to tell, but to those too young or new to the city it's just another concrete monolith. The eighteen-story-high brutalist structure at St. George and Bloor is the subject of Ron Mann's documentary, Dream Tower, and is also the result of a group of idealistic students in the late sixties who hoped to challenge reigning educational models.

They believed that students should have more control over curriculum, design and teach their own courses, as well as run the administration. Young people rallied behind the idea and its popularity grew, but space became a concern. There had been no central location for the school, so the feds gave them seed money - 5 million dollars - for the construction of a building for the college which would include a residence. The Rochdale dream was becoming a reality.

The design by architects Tampold and Wells was unique, accommodating for communal living and areas that were known as ashrams, each unit of which was independent and responsible for its own welfare. The free college accepted many kinds of people into the fray from hippies and homeless to drug-dealers and draft-dodgers, however the lack of regulation and direction resulted in chaos. Rochdale's student body soon couldn't reach consensus on anything, like what to do about their open door policy, and the school quickly became a haven for biker gangs, dealers and their clientele. Cops' visits then became so frequent some students would welcome them with freshly baked cakes.

Seven years later, in 1975, the Rochdale dream lost steam. Political pressure led to the school's closure. Police carried the last of the students out and welded the doors shut. Today a monument called the Unknown Student rests outside the building, now named the Senator David A. Croll Apartments. Not all of Rochdale's creativity went up in smoke however, the Rochdale movement helped propel the creative minds behind Toronto cultural institutions Coach House Press, House of Anansi Press and Theatre Passe Muraille.

I love seeing how Toronto Fashion Week evolves each season, now just underway at Nathan Philips Square. Just looking through the schedule of events one can see the list of contributors is growing and morphing from a few fan favourites - Denis Gagnon, Andy The-Anh, Pink Tartan and Greta Constatine - to a sophisticated roster of Canadian talent. I'll miss Izzy Camilleri this year but am excited by some fresh scene-stylers. Keep your eyes peeled for designs by Nadya Toto, Mellinda-Mae Harlingten and Tatsuaki. Newcomers Evan Biddell and Carlie Wong of Project Runway will have a chance to impress next week, while Russian designer Max Chernitsov brings some international flare to Toronto.

Toronto Fashion Week to Hit the Street

Taking a page from NYC's Fashion Week, celebrated in midtown's Bryant Park, Toronto's week of runway shows is also back in a prime pedestrian intersection, Nathan Philips Square. I've been around for the Liberty Grand shows and Muzik too but this venue excites me a bit more. Likely it's because the best fashion I see in Toronto is on the streets, where style is most exposed. It's also where, rubbing shoulders with strangers all day long, fashion plays the biggest part in your identity, you can play it up or play it down, be anyone you feel, swathed in a sweet cloak of anonymity.

Over two years ago I started "curating" a flickr photo pool called fourONEsixSTYLE, so i could have a gallery of thumbnails for readers to explore on this site - you can see it to your left. At the time there were only one or two photo groups that showed Toronto some love. Now that flickr's grown so have the groups, but I'm still very proud of this one and all 328 Toronto enthusiasts documenting Toronto the good and Toronto the not-so-good. Here's one photograph from recent submissions that grabbed my attention. It might not be unique to Toronto but to me it's encouraging; even in the strangest of places, on top of a garbage can, in a back alley, you can still find something worth photographing if you've got a sense of adventure, imagination and in this case a bit of nostalgia too.

Ron Jeremy Wants You To Read

Ron Jeremy, who may very well be The Hardest (Working) Man in Showbiz, swung by The Gladstone last week to stimulate us with stories from his recent autobiography. From the moment he mounted the stage the adult film icon was on a roll, dropping a few of the 1900 porn titles he's starred in: Halloweenie, Weapons of Ass Destruction (Ouch!), Fantastic Foreskin and Throbin Hood.

But interviewer Sasha Von Bon Bon was quick to cut him off, trying to take control of the stage right from the start. While Bon Bon carries a certain weight around town - writing the sex column for Eye Magazine and performing in burlesque shows - her petulance was an annoyance throughout the talk. Like in her column, Sasha seemed to have a need to voice her disdain for certain parts of sex culture. It really surprised me that a woman with the clout she has would use it this way, revealing her less than healthy attitude, in this case towards marriage (everyone cheats don't they?), sex for/with seniors (Jeremy talked of one film where he had sex with an 87 year-old woman) and industry beauty standards (it's easy to knock fake boobs when you're sporting doubleDs). It was the wrong match for a man like Jeremy, who makes no apologies for what he does, but also having really seen and done it all is realistic about sex in all its variations and life in general.

While Ms. Bon Bon bounced between the conflicted personas of attention-hungry schoolgirl and jaded lover, Jeremy, the consummate pro, spewed anecdotes from his life in porn and we lapped up every dirty bit.

RIP Jeff Healey

Sadly, on Sunday night, Canadian musician Jeff Healey passed away at St. Joseph's hospital in the westend of Toronto. The cancer that had caused his blindness at the age of one had spread throughout his body and could no longer be controlled by doctors.

Healey had had a successful career, rising up the international music charts and winning a Grammy award for the ballad Angel Eyes. He was to become a famous figure in Toronto's jazz and rock music scene, lending his name to a couple popular music venues.

I met him once, outside Healey's on Bathurst. I'd been having a drink at The Paddock next door with a friend, and we'd made our way out for a cigarette on the patio. Out of the blue a smooth voice sidled up to us and said "Hello Ladies! Care to join me for a drink?" We were charmed by the tall blond man we both knew to be Jeff Healey so we found ourselves taking his arm to follow him downstairs for a drink. We had a few laughs and then watched him perform. He was a classy and talented man, with an obvious love for what he did. Rest in Peace.

Doc Soup Screens Autism: The Musical

Though the causes of autism cannot be definitively pinpointed, it has become apparent that cases of autism have increased dramatically since the 1980's. It wasn't until a couple of summer's ago that I'd met someone with this brain development condition. At first he seemed odd, sociable, but unable to make eye contact. Then, his fixations with unusual things like highway rumble strips and recording everything from voices to generator noises, made him more curious to me and my friends who interacted with him. Now, what defines him most is his fascination with the play Evil Dead: The Musical. He'll ask everyone he meets whether they've seen it and what they think of it. He's gone so far as to get some of the cast members' t-shirts, covered in fake blood, and wear them out to parties. No doubt dressing up for Halloween is his favorite time of year.

Since I really know very little about people with Autism, I'm hoping that this week's Doc Soup screening "Autism: The Musical" will shed some light on the associated personality traits, not only the repetitive and extremely intelligent aspects of the neurological encumbrance we've come to know from Rain Man, but also how a focus on creative expression can help those with Autism. It's fascinating, when you know that most of us only use 5% of our brain's capacity, that there may be a key there in understanding this different wiring that might help us all evolve a little further.

Screenings are at 6:30 and 9:15 this Wednesday the 5th. Tickets are currently available online for the later show. You'll have to take your chances to get into the early one.

Preloved Perseveres!

Less than a week after a tenacious fire tore through Queen West, Preloved is back in business. As of tomorrow a temporary store will open at 24 Ryerson Ave, in the basement suite, to showcase the spring styles that fortunately survived the blaze. Opening hours are Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays from 12-6pm.

Recently I visited the (now destroyed) store on Queen to take some pictures and ended up walking away with a reconstructed tie-up blazer in a beautiful forest green. The price tag was high - about $150 - but I knew I was going to have a one of a kind piece in my wardrobe. One of a kind style is what Preloved does best.

Flickr might be the top place to dig up photos of the six-alarm scorcher that tore though several historic Queen West buildings this morning.

The photo here by taxing is one of the best I've found from the early morning. If you're filled with intrigue too check some other flickites' sites like JL 1967, Johnny Mad or xarq.

Word is that firefighters have now gained control of the inferno though smoke continues to spread for several blocks. I can still taste it despite being over four blocks away. Riders beware - subways have been experiencing issues with lack of air circulation as well.

Six-Alarm Fire Still Burning on Queen West

A fire that broke out this morning at 5AM continues to burn on Queen Street West at Portland between Spadina and Bathurst. All residents were evacuated and no one was injured but damage to this historic stretch has spead to at least 15 businesses including Duke's Cycle, Preloved, Suspect Video, a headshop called Jupiter and Pizzaiolo. It is so bad these buildings can not likely be salvaged. Firefighters, who are still working hard to contain the blaze, revealled that there is some explosive material within one of the buildings but will not comment on what that material might be. Surrounding streets are closed to traffic.

A Night at Caren's with Gondry

I messed up previously laid plans when I was offered preview passes to Mos Def and Jack Black's new flick Be Kind Rewind. The clincher was the Q&A with director Michel Gondry. Gondry's well-known in film for directing The Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind but it's his unique style directing music videos for the White Stripes and Bjork that gets my attention. Bad news is I got to the screening (right on time) and all the seats were filled (yeah, apparently there's a disclaimer you're supposed to read) so my friends and I had to change course. We headed to Caren's Wine Bar across the street (158 Cumberland) since I'd heard they had some swish mac and cheese and a tasty fondue too.

We sunk into our seats upstairs and I noticed that Richard Crouse, the easily recognizable host of Rogers Television's Reel to Real, was seated near to us. Hmmm...I wonder who he's dining with in Yorkville. Sure enough it's Michel Gondry, having a glass of red before ducking into the theatre to begin a round of questioning.

I wanted to give him my two cents too, tell him that my photo of him is used in his wikipedia profile, but best we could do was "So you couldn't get into the movie either?" He seemed rushed and faked a laugh, but he seemed to be doing that a dinner with his guests too. Solemn and reserved; not at all what I'd expect. Shouldn't you be a people person as an accomplished director? Maybe not. This is the guy, after all, that developed what's now called "the bullet technique", made famous by The Matrix. Oh well, I guess he's a technical guy. I can appreciate that.

We missed our chance with him and we missed the Q&A, instead we sat at Caren's waiting forever for food and drinks to have overly formal staff bring us overly mediocre food. (And, hey, shouldn't you have a decent selection of wines if you want to call yourself a wine bar?)

Besides good company the night was a bust - but hey, I did get another movie pass, to try and get into the movie another time.

It's the day of New Year's in Toronto and I've been out of town with my boyfriend for several days. All he wants is his shirt drycleaned for tonight but it's 2 in the afternoon. Together we've called every dry cleaners in Bloor West, the Junction and Roncesvalles Village and no one can offer us the 1-hr service even if that's part of their company name. Nothing pops up online for 1-hour service downtown either. It's one of those times it makes me ownder what kind of city this is? Aren't there business people out there who recognize a need for this service especially on a day like today? They could've easily charged my BF $20 and he would've gladly paid it. Me, I'm just sad Toronto can't get its act together.

Friend Mark McKay was asked to make one of his ranty vids on the subject of cars in the GTA for MTV Canada. The facts on the dangers of driving aren't new but it's worth a look to see Mark's take on the subject and his great cutting style. (I love watching him poke out from behind interviewees like Cam Woolley). First time I watched it I felt like the big bad driver that I am. Now, a couple weeks after a stupid license suspension, I can say I'm a weathered TTC rider and poo-poo all the drivers out there too!

Miss Drew Barrymore's been spotted regularly sucking back bevies at Ossington hideaway Sweaty Betty's. She's in town filming the HBO MOW version of documentary classic Grey Gardens. Friends caught lovely Jude Law at a Leafs game, and I spotted model, coach and Canada's Next Top Model judge Stacy McKenzie (pictured above) riffling through the racks at a GSUS sindustries sample sale this afternoon (runs until Friday at 6PM).

Lately I've been spending a fair bit of time along the banks of Grenadier Pond in High Park taking video and snapping photos. Sunset by the pond is stunning. Milky mauve shades stretch across the water and dim as yellow leaves gather at the glowing shore. This latest favourite still photo I've captured reveals a fishing platform jutting out over the pond, a little slice of paradise among the giant trees that burst with autumn colour.

Finding Union at the Station

It's always brought a pang of jealousy when I visit other cities who have managed to create transportation hubs that compell us to stay and soak up the energy of people on the move. Osaka, New York, Kyoto and Copenhagen all enjoy train stations that serve not only as destinations for travellers but also those who live in the city and just want to feel the buzz. Union Station in Toronto has never excited me. There is no decades old Oyster bar to entice me to its lower levels like Grand Central or soaring sky yard to explore as in Kyoto's Central Station, but at least now there is a vision. Mayor Miller wants to give Union Station a well-overdue facelift. I certainly hope this doesn't just culminate in some updated retail spaces, reminiscent of the bland shops in our underground shopping mall, just to generate more city revenue. Whatever changes are made should dazzle tourists and Torontonians alike. Open up the space. Lift those weary travellers out of their tunnel vision. Sweep away the dingy and haphazard and make its history shine once more. Most of of all I'd love to see the city revive some of the grandeur of the station's origins on Front Street when it was the Grand Trunk Railway.

February Gets A Long Weekend

Premier Dalton McGuinty, feeling fresh from his latest victory, took to the podium to announce a new long weekend for Ontarians. Beginning this February, on the third Monday of the month, we'll all be celebrating Family Day. I've been hoping for another day off to hit the hills when the snow starts piling up. Great idea. This also puts Ontario on par with B.C., Alberta, Saskatchewan and the Territories, giving us 9 days a year off from work and more time for leisure.

Toronto Ski & Snowboard Show Starts Today

If you're one of those people who, all winter long, talk of nothing but the crappy weather there might be something you can do to turn that frown upside down: snowboarding. All summer long while everyone talks about how beautiful it is I'm secretly wishing snow would fall, and keep falling.

Finally the wait is almost up. This weekend's Toronto Ski, Snowboard and Travel Show marks the unofficial start to the season. From today at 3PM through to Sunday at the Automotive Building, Exhibition Place, you can find all the snowgear you'll ever need and plan any winter getaways too. Gear is usually last year's stock and priced to fly. It's not just boards and bindings, great deals can be found on sporty winter jackets and "underwear" too.

All that's left to consider is where to board when the flakes start falling. Mount St. Louis Moonstone offers great beginner "discovery" packages which include a lesson, rentals and lift all for under $55, but if you're serious about the white stuff Blue Mountain's selling a 5x7 - all nights and weekdays lift pass - for $164 until October 22nd. Last year I waited too long and had to pay double - still worth every penny. This time, I'll pick up my pass at the snowboard show. They'll take my picture and I'll be done with it - no hour long lines when I'm busting to get on the hill.

Admission to the show is $15.

A Greener Cause

This is what I love about politics. There's a whole lot of talk about what's right and wrong but when it comes down to it it's really all about action.

Last election I did my research to see how much (or how little) the political parties in my riding, Parkdale - High Park, were doing to support the environment. It was on everyone's agenda and they were all purporting to support it. The release I wrote last election, A Greener Campaign will show you just how well the other parties act on their promises, however this little video will show you that too, in only 9 seconds.

Despite promises from the Liberal, the NDP or even the Conservatives, only the Ontario Green Party have spent the time to plan and deliver an agenda that will put the environment on the right track while being sure that your tax dollars are not spent frivoulously (read NDP) by your future government. Besides that you've got to love a leader like Frank de Jong who blasts by Howard Hampton's idling tour bus while on his bicycle.

PS. Election day is Wednesday, October 10th. Get out and vote!

This guy was working the yellow, right up to his canary-coloured Blue Jay's baseball cap. Fortunately sports teams are modernizing their gear.

Because I'm more about sporty style than high-fashion I totally dug this girl's seventies throwback sporty mix. Pat Benetar would be proud. Notice she's also busting the gold chain.

BlogTV Runs Out of Gas

It wasn't long ago blogTV.ca (no relation) announced its TV portal of the future by cruising the city in obnoxious Hummers screaming out for attention, and 'viewers'. Initially business was good for the social networking slash video site, owned and operated by Alliance Atlantis. However, since the launch in March, traffic had dropped steadily and sales never really got off the ground. Today, a memo explaining this and declaring that the end is in sight was circulated to employees in the interactive department. There's no future for these kids. Playback speculates several execs may go down with the ship too.

I can't say I'm upset about this. My first experience with the site was one of disgust. I'd attended Ron Jeremy's book launch at The Gladstone and suffered some audio issues with my camera. I needed some video fast. Since I knew the crew from blogTV had been there I scoped their site for some video of the event. The first I came across was a pre-Jeremy interview with two lovely ladies in the back of the blogTV limo, er, Hummer. The backseat sleazeball from the site kept zooming in on the girl's boobs then began asking them to take their tops off for the camera. It didn't seem like these girls had expected the 'interview' to take this direction. They politely declined, and then it just got gross. The 'interviewer' was fixated on getting his money shot and wouldn't take no for an answer. He kept repeating his proposal. They held firm, surely hoping Jeremy would soon arrive and break-up the routine. It was uncomfortable for me, so I can only imagine how these ladies felt. Next time I saw the blogTV Hummer parked on College Street I made a point of telling them how horrible I thought they were and never visited their site again. Adios sleazeballs.

According to the memo the site will cease operating on the 28th. As of yet no plans are in place to maintain or move user-generated content. Read what people think about the demise of blogTV on blogTO.

Yesterday the Toronto International Film Festival prepared itself for the next wave of filmsters, opening up single ticket sales. I was impressed with the addition of a relatively quiet stand at Roy Thompson Hall to take the burden off the continually busy box offices at Manulife and College Park. However, I wasn't so impressed when I walked down to RTH only to find the film I wanted to see had already sold out. Though I might be able to RUSH This Beautiful City, a film about the gentrification and friction between classes in Toronto's Parkdale neighborhood, I'm doing my best to work facebook and craigslist angles to see what pops up first.

Winehouse Off the Record: New Line Up for Virgin Fest

I've been sitting on the edge of the fence, deciding whether I wanna pay my $80, for day one of Virgin Festival on Toronto Island September 8th. I would've gone for Amy Winehouse and Bjork but now the bitchy crooner has dropped out and I don't feel like paying the bucks to see cute little Bjork perform for only an hour or two. I've seen her on the Island before and it was okay. The view sucked for everyone unless you were on a picnic table or right at the front since the grounds have no naturally built-in gradient.

My fav show/concert ever was Bjork at the Hummingbird Centre, each song built up methodically over 15 minutes, layering effects by computer technicians Matmos, a choir from Greenland, a harp and Bjork herself emerging on stage as if in a fairy tale. Virgin festival, with its wham bam attitude, won't come close to comparing.

Winehouse was really the clincher for me, having missed her appearance at The Mod Club earlier this year, but she's cancelled all her September shows and is out of the line up for Branson's big music festival. Must have something to do with all the gory details emerging from a bloody fight with her beau. Hope those two sort out their drug problems before Winehouse's father-in-law convinces everyone to boycott her and business plummets. Despite her drug issues and bitchy demeanour I would've dropped the cash in a sec to see her. Now I'm dropping my plans to go to V-fest instead.

Photographers and astrologers in Toronto take note, if you're able to get up at 4:51am tomorrow morning you're in for a treat. Get outdoors and you'll catch a total lunar eclipse as the earth's shadow slowly passes in front of the moon. It'll deliver celestial fans in North and South America a spectacular view of a copper red glowing globe in the sky. The planetary process will take an hour and a half to move through its heavenly course. Worth setting your alarm clock for I'm sure.

Who Doesn't Love a Little S'Mac?

I've been eating mac and cheese since I was a key kid and, as Gridskipper's Chris Mohney puts it best, I expect to be gumming it down well into my dotage. The best place for the chewy cheese in Toronto is, hands down, Freshwood Grill on Roncesvalles. Made with four cheeses, fun spiral pasta and a bit of tomato and basil, I guarantee you'll come crawling back for it on your carb-carving days. At $10 bucks a pop this ain't kid's play though.

Scanning through Gawker today I came across a link to Mr. Mohney's piece on the Best Mac and cheese in the big Cheese - NYC. I was thrilled to learn about S'Mac in Manhattans' East Village. The people who created this divine orange eatery (pictured above) must truly have macaroni madness. I used to make fun of a co-worker who'd spend his long weekend's visiting the last few St.Hubert's in Ontario, but now I'm geeking out at the thought of taking a trip for a little NYC S'Mac.

Walking Into the Floating World

I've been captivated by woodblock prints for sometime and finally made my way to the ROM Friday night to see their exhibit Drama & Desire: Japanese Paintings from the Floating World. This is the last weekend the exceptional collection is on display. While the pieces are predominantly from the early period, before colour technologies blossomed, it is a great starting point to learn about the art and history of Edo.

Before there was Tokyo, there was Edo, a scintillating place for artists, actors and musicians to celebrate life, sex and nature, oooh, and clothing, beautiful clothing. While in Tokyo I'd once seen a portrait, a slice of Edo, of several women floating around in a boat, drinking sake in lavish kimonos, celebrating the arrival of cherry blossoms and the changing seasons while monkeys performed and musicians played. If only I could be transported back in time to enjoy this rich and poetic culture.

This exhibit showed some screens and scrolls with similar scenes, women in colourful garbs fishing, lounging and smoking, with always a bit of nature peaking out of the background reminding you where the people were; beside each piece, a charming tale to help bring the art to life.

I'll admit I was a bit dismayed that the ukiyo-e collection at the ROM, on loan from Boston, was missing some of the great masterpieces I'd expected. There were limited pieces from Hiroshige and Hokusai and only one true landscape piece, Hokusai's Li Bai Admiring A Waterfall. It's his prints that always strike me the most. While he's well-known for The Great Wave, it's his pieces with one solitary individual in the throws of nature that I'm especially drawn to, those that make you reflect on the power within yourself and aware of the delicate balance mankind shares with his surroundings.

Wakestock Washes up on Toronto Islands

By the time Saturday rolled around I was getting pretty anxious to get over to the islands to see what was in store for the Wakestock’s 10th anniversary jam. We learned the hard way that the ferry is probably the worst way to get to Centre Island (the water taxi was only 10 bucks) but my friends and I waded through the lineup and got aboard a ferry within an hour.

Over at Centre Island things were heating up and getting messy. Kids were already passing out and Bud Light cans littered the grass . All eyes, however, were on the ladies at the Miss Reef bikini contest. When the drool contest was over, the winner was declared, then it was time for the crowd to shake it too.

It was sweet to hear De La Soul drop some beats from back in tha day.

They mixed it up and cranked out the energy, working the crowd until we all had our hands in the air and were yelling back the lyrics.

At one point the show stopped as we all heard a loud chainsaw rip through a tree branch to make some room for motocross riders. It didn't go over well with De La Soul or their crowd, yelling ensued and the sawing stopped. Fortunately they did very little damage to the tree. This didn't stop TStar and TOist from overblowing it and making it seem as though a giant tree came crashing down. If you wanna talk tragedy, the lack of recycling for 40,000 fans drinking beer or bottled water and throwing butts in the lake was a major mistake.

After all that shouting we deserved a drink and found a little marina for a break. Behind the building, a few boys who I'm sure were wakeboarders were winding down with a game of volleyball while one dirty boy was rolling around in the dirt with a big smile on his face. My girlfriends swapped some words with the hotties and left them to sweat it off. About an hour later, as we sailed slowly through the western channel we saw the boys racing toward us. They mooned us and sped off.

Five seconds later, a police boat with sirens wailing slammed through the channel too. We watched the police chase them across the lake and I swear they never caught up. I love watching the police boats race through the lake and that was one chase I’ll never forget.

Sunday promised new beginnings and an excellent round up of athletes in the wakeskate, railslide and wakeboard tricks finals but my girls and I were suffering from exhaustion and didn’t make it there until late afternoon.

As the sun fell over the Islands I was torn between listening to Lupe Fiasco on the main stage and watching the top four wakeboard finalists compete in the Malibu Boats Expression Session.

I couldn't tear myself away from the tight competition though and stood screaming my ass off for Muskoka rider Rusty Malinoski in the final four. He nailed the tricks over and over showing incredible stamina, but it was Phillip Soven who impressed the judges with technical trick perfection. Andrew Atkinson (wakeboarder above) turned my head too. I loved watching these riders push the limits of the sport, trying all sorts of new combos including a shot at the first completed 1080 of the day.

About 40,000 people washed up on the Toronto Islands this past weekend for Wakestock's biggest and messiest event ever. I got my adrenalin fill and learned a bit about wakeskating as well. For those willing to give it a shot I can attest the water's warm now and if you get stuck on the island, like many of us did, you could always use one to paddle back to the city.

Evil Mermaids at the Toronto Islands

I spent an amazing weekend on the Toronto Islands at Wakestock's 10th anniversary blow out listening to hip hop and watching crazy wakeboarders pull stunts in the splash. Didn't dare take the Centre Island ferry with the crowds pouring out on Sunday night so my friends and I walked about 45 minutes to get the Ward Island ferry which we missed by 1 minute. After such a fun filled weekend all I wanted to do was take a nap on the beach (since we had another 45 minutes of waiting) but I was drawn to the glowing gold in the water. Felt like the sirens were beckoning me to come in and join them. I resisted but got some video of the evil mermaid's killer call.

Get Jacked at Wakestock this Weekend

Island residents be warned, Wakestock is back bigger and badder than ever. The event is celebrating ten adrenalin filled years and promises to be a huge blow out, mixing punk and hip hop culture under a banner of edgy board sport (and bikini) competitions.

There'll be no shortage of eye-candy - you can check out motocross, skateboard, wakeskate and of course wakeboard events. Last year I wasn't sure what to expect, I thought I'd be stuck in the stands miles from nowhere hoping for a glance of the action. Instead I was knee deep in warm water leaning on a rail while riders landed sick tricks right in front of my face. You've got to be able to appreciate what these kids can do.

Just as hype as the sport side is what's happening on stage all weekend. Wakestock seems to be pushing the Grammy angle, bringing big names to perform music at this summer's show. I'll be getting jacked on beats by De La Soul, Lupe Fiasco and Del The Funky Homosapien while taking a schoolin from punk pros Goldfinger and The Deftones.

With such a wicked mix of events on the island it's really as good as it gets for those of us in TO who love beach life. You can wander the island, watch the waves and get some sweet inspiration from athletes who've trucked in from all over the world just to show you what they do best. If that doesn't get you jacked maybe a dunk in the lake will do it for you.

Wakestock starts today, runs until Sunday. Ticket prices vary. Catch the ferry to Centre Island.

Toronto Ad Company Brings Home Cannes Prize

It's the first time in the history of the Cannes Lions Prize that an ad has taken home awards for both the Cyber and Film categories furthering convergence of these two mediums. I first saw Dove's Evolution ad on YouTube last fall and immediately added it to my favorites list, it's brilliant. Since it was uploaded it's been viewed over 3.5 million times, that's a huge audience that sought out the ad and gave it their 1 minute and 15 seconds.

The ad, produced by the Toronto office of advertising empire Ogilvy & Mather, continues to demonstrate the ideal of authenticity that the Dove brand is known for. I'm continually impressed at their use of media. Two summers ago Dove presented a photo exhibit featuring real and diverse women taken by well-known female photographers (Lieibovitz for example). In tandem they were working on a documentary with Toronto prodco Telefactory and broadcaster W Network called Beauty Quest. The documentary followed a female fashion photographer in Toronto as she confronted her own ideals of beauty.

At the end of the day we all want to feel good about ourselves and know there's more to it than buying the perfect product.

2007 Pug Awards - Winners & Losers

Turns out my favourite Toronto building of 2006 was the same one everyone else voted for in the latest annual round up of the best and worst of Toronto architecture. I've always been a fan of modern design and architecture, so I'm very pleased the Gardiner Museum got top scores from the Pug Award panel and public. I'm also thrilled that I'm not the only one out there with a vision and desire for a city focusing its attention on modernity with some complexity, while also building up around playful public spaces.

One big loser in the competition was the Pug Award site itself, as is evident from the feedback on the blogTO entry I'd written called Who Cares About Architecture? It's functionality and design scored super-low among site visitors who were expecting something more from a competition that favours design and interactivity in the real world but couldn't live up to those virtues in a virtual one.

Since the Pug Award site was designed in a way which didn't allow me to link to the results page, and also doesn't keep results archives, I've decided to share some of the info here with you on fourONEsixSTYLE.

It was a crazy day yesterday with native protests all around the city, some peaceful and some threatening violent or economic measures. Things seem back to order now but it leaves us all a little jarred. Those who were inconvenienced by road or rail closures probably don't have any sympathy for protesters wishing to claim back land. I implore you all to reflect on this beautiful country and its variety of inhabitants, its history too. Try to learn something new this holiday, enjoy the land and leave no trace.

Every year I get to see a bit more of Pride. My first visit threw me right into the middle of a parade overflowing on Church Street while last years' visit was overshadowed by big adverts and cheesy beer tents. This year I steered clear of both. I headed straight for the main stage to see Lady Miss Kier, front-woman for Dee-light. She broke out classics like Groove Is In The Heart, reminding my how much I loved her fun tracks and far-out antics. Lady Bunny came next to the stage whipping us with musical satire and punchy one-liners. She screamed at the crowd and we threw it back in her face. She was rude, lewd and dirty and we loved every minute of it.

Toronto Signatures

I've been a bit of a flickrite for awhile and been asked by poeple around the world whether my photos can be used in print and online. It's been exciting. Despite seeing my photo printed in Travel Girl, hearing Marketing Magazine used a shot (without asking I might add) and getting a Green Roof shot into Bruce Mau's Massive Change exhibit in Chicago, my highlight is having my shot of the Revue hanging in the Intercontinental Hotel's Signatures Restaurant (220 Bloor Street West).

The resto recently renovated and rebranded. Now it's filled with a stunning array of images from all our favourite spots in Toronto. I went there with my aunt recently to have a bite, and although it was a quiet Monday night the experience was fantastic. Of course the service was terrific (being that it was so quiet) and I enjoyed our server's sense of humour (no stiffness here), but it was the food and the little extras that kept popping up on our table that made the night. All the food was native to Ontario, which to me is a another huge plus. I ate the Manitoulin Island trout with soba noodles and broth - delicious - while enjoying a dark red glass of wine and looking out over Proof's beautiful patio next door. It's what summer in the city is all about.

The Distillery District's Dark Side

The Distillery District is one of a few places I visited during last weekend's Doors Open Toronto. This heritage area can be found near Parliament and Lakeshore, just off Mill Street.

Down at the Distillery the doors had been thrown open to buildings and secret areas few of us ever get to see inside. Within the dusty Scale Tank Loft we found the tanks and scales used by the government to measure and ultimately tax the booze which flowed out of Gooderham & Worts until the 1990's.

We wandered into the open Rack House where booze was stored for 2 years at a time until it was allowed to be sold, another government intervention.

I was most excited to get into the Kilns Building and Tunnel but regrettably didn't have the time to wait in the long line leading down into these secret catacombs.

Instead, my friends and I wandered through the street level galleries, like my favourite the Monte Clark Gallery, and found some artists on the upper levels who willingly threw their doors open too. Then, a bit thirsty from the dusty air and dry heat, we stopped in at the Mill Strett Brewery for a beverage and a bite. (I had a ceasar but I do love their Organic beer).

I'd gone down with a couple friends since one had told me she'd never seen the Distillery. I'm still amazed when I hear from Torontonians that they've never visited this part of the city which boasts North America's largest example of Victorian Industrial architecture and is a popular spot for filming in Toronto.

It's lovely but packed during the day with pedestrian only sidewalks brimming with people and pooches. Given its eerie history it's fun to wander through the Distillery's dark and empty pathways by moonlight too.

Cirque Avaia's Feast of Might and Fright

On a recent night Jerrold, Sameer and I headed up to Woodbine racetrack for a night under the big top with Cirque Avaia. Happily forgoing candy apples for a nice drink, we strolled into the main tent to see what the Kantemirov Family - the Russian family dynasty who'd created the show - had in store for us. With horses billed as a big part of their act I could only imagine something like Medieval Times but I was hoping there was more to it than childish role-play.

The show opened on a somber note, with curious bohemian clowns in an underwater scene while sonic rain began to fall on our heads. As Cirque Avaia continued we were awed by the lavishness of it all, massive horse breeds danced around the ring while acrobats in lush costumes flung overhead. The loose theme seemed to be a journey through time and place lingering in medieval eras, but this was no Medieval Times, instead I felt like I'd come upon one of George Lucas' transient villages. I was both curious and a bit unsure.

The flow through acts left us jarred at times, ebbing and flowing between scenes of melancholy and tribal celebration. These latter built up my excitement, reminding me of something out of alieninflux' Harvest Festival and its focus on visual treats served up with bassy beats. Avaia's costumes (for both humans and horses) were stunning, and the original music was a perfect compliment to the circus' shifting moods and otherworldly feel.

Despite the array of brilliant visual and aural stimuli, Cirque Avaia lacked the glossy touches rival troupe Cirque du Soliel is known for. To me this was a positive point, since I found it helped me connect with the show on a more real level. The performers were hard working and disciplined but not so much so that their faces held back the strain and sacrifice of demonstrating their life's work under the bright lights' unforgiving glare. Sitting close to them I was filled with the same tension they must've felt before moments before these acrobats pelted themselves though the air and gymnasts dropped and dangled above us on a thread. I was left both dazzled and made to gasp.

Just when I'd felt you could cut the tension in the room with a knife... the knife thrower came out and did just that. From our perspective the man seemed to lose control of one of his knives, darting through the air over the heads of a group next to us. More anxiety filled me as a horse lost footing and fell. Fortunately it was fine and quickly regained composure. After this it became difficult to enjoy any of the horse scenes, wondering what might happen as the ringmaster loudly cracked his whip.

Luckily the clowns saved the day. Their interlude was a charming touch and nothing like the cliched acts usually offered up under the big top. We argued later whether it was their performance that had made the show. They consistently amused the crowd, and it wasn't just the kids who were all giggles, they won us over too.

Saturday night will bring together talented house music DJs JoJo Flores of Therapy and Nicolas Matar from Cielo in NYC. I heard Matar spin one night at this intimate club in the heart of the meat-packing district and you couldn't have pulled me out of there, and JoJo, well he's been bringing sexy beats to the Toronto scene for years. Toronto Architecture: Playing the Fame Game

In Toronto, as in all cities, there are those who care about architecture and those who don't notice a thing. Fortunately those who do care are a vocal bunch, whether blogging or putting the word out publicly. If you're the caring kind too there's a new place for you to make your opinion count. The Pug Awards (formerly the Pugly Awards but now with a cute little pug-faced icon) offers a slick new website where all of Toronto can get involved in the state of architecture by way of a vote. They post the latest building projects and you pick whether you think the design deserves FAME or SHAME. By June 6th votes are tallied for a celebrated best and worst of Toronto architecture list.

Not sure how to judge? The Pug Awards, now in its fifth year, offers up some advice to voting novices. In this competition originality is king - no more brick boxes - it's gotta have the fresh factor and add something to it's surroundings. Interaction at street level is also integral - who needs another condo with built-in strip mall?

Last year the site registered 5000 votes and hopefully registered on the minds of developers working to build up a beautiful city. Hall of shamers include a growing list of condo developments while some of the favs are the National Ballet School and Calatrava's BCE Place Atrium. However, I can't help but think that our opinions often change over the years, even if we offer resistance initially. Many of us were astonished by OCAD's new addition when it first sprouted up. I'll admit now it's grown on me.

Contact Festival Kicks Off at Brassaii

Friday night's Brassaii party kicked off the Contact Photography Festival exhibiting across Toronto until May 31st. Photographers Alex vs Alex set up a photo booth to get stills of the crowd as they entered, setting a bit of a red carpet vibe. Meanwhile Toronto's most loved photobloggers were in full swing getting their snaps of the jumping crowd inside while others milled though large prints of Toronto strewn across Brassaii's glossy white walls. CBC's report on Contact finds fellow blogTO writer Jerrold Litwinenko inside before the show.

Cherry Blossoms in Bloom

I may have missed the little jam in High Park this weekend but it doesn't mean I haven't spent time appreciating the cherry blossom trees in bloom, donated to Toronto by the Japanese government in the 50s. For me it's the real sign of summer coming and there's almost no better way to appreciate the nature than spending time under the boughs of this beautiful tree, except maybe how I spent some time today, playing and petting a newborn squirrel who came to visit me and my shoe.

At Dr. G's The Doctor is Always Generous

Consistency is one of the main ways I rate a restaurant. It's important to set a certain standard and continually live up to that standard one's set. Dr. Generosity is one of the rare places I've found that does just that.

Since the first time I walked through the door of this Bloor West Village restaurant a couple years ago, I've found it a hospitable place with a great menu. Add to this the friendly Doctor, Dr.G, who really cares about how his restaurant is run.

Their menu has a ton of variety, for kids, vegetarians, for everybody. My fav is their lunch menu (really a brunch menu) that lasts until 3pm on weekends. I usually show up with about 10 minutes left and chose from a tuna melt deliciously made with apples or my regular, Eggs Dostoyevsky (Eggs Benny but with Salmon). With a side of salad and lemon basil sauce, and a tiny cup of fruit salad, it's definitely a generously-sized meal, and always made with fresh ingredients. The caesars with horseradish are made just right too, every time.

Terminal One Welcomes Feist Back to Toronto

It's not often Toronto's Terminal One at Pearson inspires me to break into song and dance. That might be different after watching Feist's new video My Moon My Man. Next time I find myself strolling down the moving sidewalks looking at our sparkling city under a full moon I don't know if I'll be able to hold back. I just hope there'll be a few others that join in.

The jetsetting Canadian singer songwriter has been away for awhile. I'm happy to hear she's just moved back to Toronto where she's filmed a few videos for her upcoming album The Reminder, scheduled for release in Canada and the US today. For now Feist is working solo but her past musical collaborations led her to work with with Broken Social Scene and former Toronto roommate Peaches.

My man Craig Williams, Location Manager on Feist's recent videos which were shot over several nights at the airport, said they were ton of fun to work on. It's a catchy song too. See what people are saying about the video on blogTO.

Fez Batik Finds A New Crowd

Signs had been up for awhile, announcing the sale of the building on the corner of Peter and Richmond, formerly known as nightclub Fez Batik. I passed often on my way up to Queen wondering what the next incarnation would bring. Maybe it would be another stuffy joint catering to lines of men in black leather, or a techno club for kids jacked up on Red Bull. If we were lucky, I'd thought, it would once again find the laid-back vibe of those who loved Fez, and the summer scene would once again jump to life on its patio. Seems though, that future plans may bring an entirely different kind of crowd.

The City is in the works to purchase the site in the hopes of facilitating the needs of homeless and displaced people in the downtown core. The centre would be open around the clock and provide beds and counseling to get people back on their feet. In theory it sounds like a beautiful thing. However, in reality, I can't imagine a worse place for these kinds of social services. I can just imagine, with music pumping and littering drunkards spilling out of clubs looking for confrontation, that comfort and stability would be the last thing one would find in the middle of our Entertainment District.

A community meeting to discuss the plans will be held tonight, 6:30PM, at Metro Hall - Room 308.

The Future is Bright

This might just change the way I think about fluorescent lighting forever. Toronto design collective Castor Canadensis has found a fun way to light a space while making sure used bulbs don't end up in landfills all over the place. Using the old tubes tied together with incandescent bulbs lighting from within makes for a fantastic showpiece, especially for those eco-sensitive design fiends out there.

Made large to be hung horizontally or 2 feet tall for table or floor versions, the lamp will surely stand out from more traditional lighting. The collective notes on their cool website that they'll cut the manufacture price by half for those who bring in burnt-out bulbs themselves from architecturally significant buildings. No word from the firm whether the design has any bearing on energy efficiency but blogTO readers have a comment or two. Hit recommend if you want to spread the word yourself.

Sneak Peek in Style: Interior Design Show 2007

Last night champagne flowed and painted-white cirque-robats glowed while media types mingled in an interior design fantasy world at the preview for the Interior Design Show 2007. I was fortunate to gain entry into the magical kingdom for a sneak peek at the fanciful design in store for us this year.

As expected, the usual design stars - Debbie Travis, Lynda Reeves and Brian Gluckstein - will be there peddling their wares, but none seemed to offer any notion of innovation or inspiration, except perhaps what we can expect the next hot colour of the season to be. Travis' "no photographs please" living space was decked in spooky black and orange. All I can say about that is "Boo!"

Moving away from the dens of domesticity, local Toronto designers were making a splash. Here are my top picks for Toronto design talent.

1. Adept with porcelain, artist Ken Gangbar, creates fluid sculptures and installations for clients from TO to HK. If you want to give ceramics a whirl too he offers workshops from his studio in Liberty Village.

2. Everything Queen East shop Up to You showed, I wanted to buy. Coolest are the wood carved clothes hangers depicting New York, Tokyo or Paris skylines, though they are $120 a pop and there's no deisgn for TO. There is an "I Heart ______(blank)" sticker though. That's where TO can go.

3. I was seriously blown away by the modern stand-alone apartment and eco-friendly fireplaces made by Ecosmart. No gas, no hard connection. Great for any place that needs a little warming up.

4. Utillity in a tile? That's where Utilitile comes in. I found these walnut wood tiles in the prototype section. Following form and function is truly the way to a Danish girl's heart.

Bookhou Design's Book Smart Style

Among the other exhibitors at this weekend's Interior Design Show is a smart Toronto upstart called Bookhou Designs. The two partners, Arounna Khounnoraj who focuses on textile and sculpture and John Booth who designs furniture, marry their talent to create beautiful handmade products for your home that seem so obviously Canadian in their adorable and unassuming way.

Pillows and playthings are adorned with owls, chickadees or meadow sprigs, while lamps and benches' curvaceous lines appear playfully constructed. I'd seen their pieces about town in places like The Paper Place (887 Queen West) and Red Pegasus (628 College Street) but enjoyed browsing their site for a better look at what they do. I'd love to see Bookhou's textile line grow to include bedding with the same bright prints they use for journals, as above. Stop by their booth at IDS07 to see what more is in store.

Toronto Tower On the Rise

There's nothing too exciting about Toronto's Yonge and Bloor intersection even though it's known as the busiest crossing in the city, connecting our east-west Bloor corridor with Yonge, the longest street in the world. That could soon change.

Developers, who have long considered building up the southeast corner, are finally pushing forward with their plans for a 60-story tower. The landmark tower, based on a proposal approved by city council in 2002, would include retail and residential space as well as a multiplex cinema.

Though it's popular to bash ill-fitting condo projects in this city, here's one that seems to makes sense. It could go a long way toward revitalizing the lackluster corner and it'll make use of existing amenities such as subway access. Increasing density along subway lines in the core is a smart move, especially where it fits into the flow of buildings already towering above the bustling streets below.

Fully Loaded at the Auto Show

Last year my friend, actor and indie filmmaker Brett Reason, shot and cut a short video which followed four car junkies (including himself) getting wasted and heading to the auto show. Their goal? See how long they could sit in the Mercedes S550 before someone kicked them out. After he showed me the piece, we debated what the name of it should be. He thought Loaded at the Auto Show would be good, I figured Fully Loaded would be more slick. It was his bit, so he won.

Brett called a couple days ago to tell me what the slogan is for this year's show - it's Fully Loaded. I'm not sure if he was more excited that we nailed their ad slogan before they did or just because the show would be starting this week, either way he got me hyped to go and I'm no car buff.

While him and his buddies cruise the fast car corner I might see what's new in hybrids. If you're still driving an old jalopy maybe you should check it out too - Metro recently reported that the biggest emissions (up to 37 times the normal amount) can come from cars 20 years old and up.

Scrap watching the auto show's promotional vid on their site, there's nothing innovative about it. Instead, amuse yourself with a little dark humour at theigloo, where you too can get Fully Loaded at the Auto Show.

Stylegarage Lights it Up

Well before the condo signs started popping up on Queen West, modern furniture boutique stylegarage had made its mark on the artsy neighbourhood. From its wrap-around windows lined with eye-catching lighting, the shop, on a quiet corner of Shaw, exudes muted and sleek sophistication. It was enough to draw me in. I'd been on a hunt for a wide and low television stand with large industrial wheels for awhile and decided to browse the boutique to see if I could find it.

Inside the design store, each modern line blended fluidly with the next, allowing their most stunning showpieces - made of grained walnut, oak, maple and douglas fir - to get full attention. Whether it's their leather sofas characterized by topstitching you'll love or chunky Canadian wood coffee tables it's obvious they design furniture to last a lifetime.

Since I've always lived in old Toronto houses with little built-in lighting I get especially excited for modern lamps of any kind. One brushed stainless-steel wall-mounted piece caught my eye. The simple style mixed with a clear vintage bulb and exposed filaments (also sold at stylegarage) would look fantastic in any pseudo-industrial space.

Though I didn't find exactly what I was looking for, friendly staff reassured me they could custom make most things. Seems they have a very close partnership with Toronto design manufacturer Gus Modern, the company that supplied the loft furniture for Martha Stewart's prime-time show The Apprentice. While Martha's run might be over you can still catch the design items at the Queen Street store or at the upcoming Interior Design Show - February 22nd to the 25th.

Vice Guide to Travel Makes Toronto Pitstop

The journey starts in the Toronto office of Vice, in Parkdale, where Derrick Beckles is doing an impression of God creating woman (read boobs). It's the intro to Beckles' piece on Paraguay for the Vice Guide to Travel, out on DVD. Sitting with him is Johnny Knoxville to whom he reveals he's heading to Nueva Germania to see what still remains of the place that survived briefly as an "Aryan utopia" in the 1800's and later became a refuge for exiled Nazis after the war. The answer is not much, just a couple bricks left to disintegrate.

With no real story to follow Beckles piece starts falling apart here too. To keep it going he finds some backwoods brothers rumoured to have turned to cannibalism. He asks the geezers a few questions, none of which get to the heart of the dark deed. It's journalism-lite but Vice seems happy just to prove to us they can look danger in the face and take us along for the ride.

In the guide, which Vice co-founder Suroosh Alvi calls a "60 Minutes meets Jackass" kinda thing, Vice correspondents take us on a tour of 7 not-so-hot tourist destinations like the most radioactive place in the world, Chernobyl's Red Forest, and then a Pygmy village in the heart of the Congo in search of a dinosaur.

Finding a prehistoric beast or a wild boar with two heads presents a serious challenge and the guys in Vice don't always get their goal. Maybe that's why I was most impressed with Suroosh's own segment in which he hooks up a visit to the largest illegal gun market in the world in Darra, Pakistan, a place where we see kids casually making bullets by hand. The BBC couldn't gain access to this dangerous place but Surroush walks in, charms the locals, buys a gun and gets his money shot.

Get Outside

Last winter my Mags gave out on me, leaving a hole in my shoe between sole and leather. I'd had them for a few seasons and had put them to good use in the city slush. The sole is a good two inches up from the ground all the way around and made of rubber, perfect for Toronto weather. I'd hoped to get a new pair once this wintery weather started so I went back to where I bought them in the first place, Get Outside. It's my favourite shoe shop, along with heel boy, and it was voted best shoe store in blogTO's Best of Indie Toronto. They've got a ton of great trainers, like Royal Elastics which I love, but they didn't have a pair of Mags in sight. They seem to have switched to something called Clarks but they're not the same.

So now I'm stranded, with no winter boots to make my way home, and I can't seem to find a pair in the city that's got style but can also keep my feet out of the wet stuff. Even stranger is that many shoe stores are already pushing their spring line-up of strappy sandals. Where am I supposed to find my snow shoes now? Some friends have told me to make the hike to Trove on Bathurst, maybe they've still got some boots on sale.

What About Wabash?

While the debate about gentrification in TO continues, many areas are receiving substantial funding to renew derelict sites across the city. The Distillery District was nothing but haunted halls used by film crews a few years back. Now the Brickworks will attempt to model the Distillery's success but with a more arts and eco-friendly community. Twenty million in funding will help to get the ball rolling on the site beside the DVP.

Yesterday, a new announcement of funding came in the tune of 3 million dollars, this time to restore Wychwood's TTC repair "barns" into what'll become known as Artscape's Green Arts Barns, offering a safe-haven to not-for-profit arts groups like The Storytellers School of Toronto and the Salvador Allende Arts Festival for Peace as well as environmental groups such as LEAF (Local Enhancement and Appreciation of Forests) and Citizens' Environment Watch.

Fortunately for everyone, environmental and arts causes are getting attention. They seem to have become as chic as Brad Pitt in his Gucci glasses pretending to build homes in India. But what about community centres? Are they not the centre of the community? And what about Wabash?

Just off Sorauren, close to Roncesvalles, two abandoned buildings sit on one side of a park just waiting for some love and attention. Years ago they housed a Linseed factory, now they are part of a plan for the future Wabash Community Rec Centre. One plan's price tag is $13 million and would include a full reno but no pool. For an extra $7 mil the building would be fully-restored along with the addition of a swank new clubhouse and a place for kids to play Marco Polo.

For some reason though, the project has been struggling for funds since day one, even though this area of Toronto desperately needs a place like this. Up until now, residents have been buying a brick at a time to help build Wabash. Just like the Revue Theatre, it was the residents who decided Wabash should be saved, but it would be great to hear that some level of government would step up to support the project or maybe Brad Pitt can come by and lend a hand.

What's Your Sign?

I was in an early morning daze at a Timothy's recently trying to grab a cup of coffee when a man stormed in ahead of me and asked to speak to the manager. He was annoyed. I was annoyed. It was one of those mornings.

There was no manager on duty so the man pled his case to two staff staring back at him vacantly from behind the counter. It was about the sandwich board stretched out on the sidewalk in front of the coffee shop. The problem, he said, was that these sandwich boards take up too much space and cause unnecessary obstacles for the blind and also elderly people using buggies. It was a valid point, one I'd never previously considered.

These ubiquitous sidewalk signs can often be ugly, pointless and ineffective, especially if they're constantly blowing over. Though sometimes there'll be a chalkboard sign with a funny little phrase meant to grab our attention and make us smile, or they'll tell us about a new thing on a restaurant menu that can make our mouth water in anticipation. For stores yearning for more exposure a sidewalk sign is a good way to get passersby to stop and notice or allow them to look down the block to see what's coming up.

There is a better option though, especially on crowded sidewalks where stores are just trying to get some more brand exposure. In the distillery district most signs are mounted overhead so to be within a good sight line and also out of the way. The overhead signs add charm to the historic neighborhood and don't intrude on public space.

In the case of the man and the Timothy's sign, the man was pissed at the employees' lack of response and tore off to move the sign himself. A couple of days later the sign was back in the same spot, dominantly claiming half the sidewalk and not really having much to say.

RV Camping in the 416

Did you know that Toronto doesn't have one spot in the city to accommodate a bunch of RVs? The answer probably never crossed your mind. Meanwhile City Councilor Case Ootes has been pushing for it for months and finally got to make his case this week at City Hall. He thinks we're missing out on an increasing demographic of RV tourists coming to TO, and he's probably right. There are about 7 million RVs in the US, one for every 12 car owning households. Imagine if we could attract even a tiny portion of that touring crowd.

Now the question is where to put the homes-on-wheels. I've heard Walmart lets people in RVs camp out in their parking lots, but it's not something I'd want to wake up to on my vacation. Instead, Downsview Park and the CNE grounds are being proposed, since both areas connect to transit. A CNE RV park would likely offer great views of the city and become a coveted camping spot but it would be hard to forget you're cramped between two major roadways. While we are talking about people who spend much of their time on (or near) the road, an RV park in Downsview, surrounded by trees and nature, has better potential to offer travelers a getaway in the city while still in the middle of it.

Line-ups at Lululemon Warehouse Sale

According to Anita Clark's website I want - I got, and mass emails quickly circulating around the city, Lululemon is having another huge warehouse sale. You can expect massive line-ups but also bargain prices for otherwise pricey yoga gear. I know the image of Lululemon-clad girls running about town has become a bit cliche, so if you'd rather avoid the stereotype Roots, Fila, and Old Navy offer yoga lines too.

Since I'm back on the yoga track, hitting Bikram classes a few times a week, I feel like I spend most of my extra time doing laundry. That's one good reason to for me to pick up some more gear. Most of Lululemon's yoga tops and bottoms are made with material that wicks away moisture too so it'll be easier to handle the heat when my Bikram's instructor jacks the thermostat to 40C+. You wouldn't catch me dropping $50 for a bra top or $75 on stretchy pants so I think I'll hit the sale like everyone else does to find some bargains.

A Better Plan for Parkdale

Parkdale residents and politicos assembled Monday night to debate the question "Where Goes The Neighborhood?" The idea was to tackle the hot topic of gentrification. I'd attended hoping that, somehow, we could all band together to create a vision for the wayward community, but hope was not to be found. With widely respected panelists such as Spacing's Matthew Blackett and the brain behind 401 Richmond, Margaret Zeidler, I'd hoped we'd do more than establish affordable housing as a priority and bash the former Harris government. Area MPP Cheri DiNovo stood up for comment too, saying she's asked for 20,000 units of affordable housing to be built in this part of TO. I'm not sure where she intends to put it though, maybe that should have been on the debate agenda instead.

As it stands amongst other Toronto communities, Parkdale currently has a large percentage of renters and, Councilor Gord Perks pointed out, is one of only a few communities that still has legal rooming houses. Perhaps Parkdale is already doing its fair share to support those in the city with lower incomes and it may not have the infrastructure in place to help the resource dependant community. Parkdale is like Kensington was years ago, a place where newcomers to Toronto settle and try to build a future. Many young families are moving in as well, renovating homes and taking pride in their new neighborhood. No one wants any displacement of current residents however, so what it needs is a plan for growth and a way to ensure that rent and property taxes don't skyrocket.

Businesses in the area are also seeing a shift. There is a much smaller percentage of variety and grocery stores, while home decor and reno stores are gaining popularity. However, commercial vacancy currently sits at 13%, making me think that gentrification isn't the real problem. I can think of a few new cafes and bars in Parkdale too but nothing too chichi or chic that it's going to get condo-dwellers buying into the "dream" of living right in the middle of the action. Ultimately it's the high-rise condos that will anchor Queen Street West, in Parkdale's neighboring ward just east of the tracks, that frighten Parkdale residents. Though, it could bring more focus westward and Parkdale could begin to see some necessary improvements. Perhaps it'll start with a few new facades, some new parks, a community centre, then a renovated building or two. There's so much promise in Parkdale, all that's needed is a plan and a way to ensure it includes all kinds of people. That's the only way Parkdale will retain its unique charm and character.

Andrews Architecture Being Destroyed

Australian architect John Andrews was considered a groundbreaking genius in the sixties, fashioning plans based on a new kind of architecture: brutalism. He'd achieved Mr. Big status after completing Scarborough College for the University of Toronto and went on to build the tallest freestanding structure in the world - our beloved CN Tower. Back in the day concrete was king and brutalism was associated with a brave new social utopian ideology. Nowadays, people like Prince Charles refer unfavourably to the works as "piles of concrete". “Rubbish”, I say. While they can sometimes give off a gloomy, almost heavy feel to the city blocks they dominate, they are as much a part of the urban landscape as the sidewalks and steel. In btonbrut's blogTO video called brutopia eclipsed we're shown other landmarks Andrews has created while questions arise as to why some are being destroyed.

Wanted: One-way Ticket to LA

You can't blame the little guy for wanting to head south to warmer weather, especially when it wasn't his intention to hitch a ride to Toronto in the back of a truck anyway. Problem is no one will take him. If it were any other animal it wouldn't be an issue, but for this smelly stowaway going back to Cali is not so easy. A one-way ticket could cost as much as US$6,000.

Though he appears friendly, the Toronto Wildlife Centre can't release the skunk because he could spread disease, but getting him across the border might be a huge problem too. Let's hope some big-hearted Torontonians come to his rescue. Anyone headed to Lalaland?

CanWest to Buy Alliance Atlantis for 2.3 Billion

Ever since Toronto broadcasting powerhouse Alliance Atlantis was put on the sales block, people in the media industry have been speculating who the potential buyer would be. Playback magazine had a front-page poll listing the possibilities as Corus, CanWest, Astral, Rogers and Quebecor. However the news this morning is that Winnipeg-based CanWest, owner of Global and the National Post, is in the lead.

CanWest would partner with Goldman Sachs in the US to purchase Alliance Atlantis for 2.3 billion dollars. Goldman's part of the purchase would include Alliance's half of the CSI franchise - sadly, I'll no longer be able to use CSI in my defense of Canadian television programming - while a new subsidiary of CanWest will take over broadcast specialty channels such as Showcase and the recently relaunched Slice channel.

At a benefit I attended in November hosted by Alliance Atlantis CEO Michael MacMillan, he ruminated about the company he started with a few of his roommates in a small Toronto apartment upon graduating from Queen's University. Now, it appears he'll be focusing on philanthropic activities like running Toronto East General Hospital's fundraising campaign.

Toronto to Lose Cinespace's Dockside Film Studio

There's nothing remarkable about the stretch of waterfront across from The Guvernment nightclub at Queen's Quay where honeywagons sit parked before a large film production studio called Cinespace. It's no surprise then that this is where the Toronto Waterfront Revitalization Corporation has set its sights to begin development of a key area of our waterfront called East Bayfront.

You'd think no one would object to the revitalization plan to include accessible waterfront and two-acre Sherbourne Park. The mixed use space, relative in size to Battery Park in Manhattan and London's Canary Wharf will also include 7000 units of housing and 1 million square feet of commercial space. Cinespace, a major player in the Toronto film scene, will need to vacate by February 21st in order for the plan to go ahead, and they claim they've just been given notice to leave the premises leased by them from City of Toronto real estate developer TEDCO.

Toronto's film industry is already dealing with city-ordered relocation of studio space, since a relative monopoly on the industry was given to the Toronto Film Studios to build Filmport. This means that space for US productions to shoot, key to the growing film industry in Toronto, is really tight. It could mean the loss of thousands of jobs if US productions find other cities that are more accommodating.

Cinespace is simply asking that it get 18 "official" months to find a new home. In the meantime Filmport and those affected by relocation can build new studios and Toronto can continue to offer the film production services it has come to be known for. Location Manager Craig Williams is one of 4454 film industry professionals who have signed an ongoing online petition agreeing that loss of studio space could have a "devastating impact" on Toronto's film industry. He believes that "while we've all been waiting for the waterfront to evolve into something we can all use and explore, the city has to have a balanced plan to ensure it is not at the expense of key industry."

Toronto Inspired Fleming's Casino Royale

Ask anybody who the new James Bond is and they'll likely be able to answer, they'll probably even add an opinion as to whether actor Daniel Craig will fill the famous Bond shoes, but ask anyone who Frank Pickersgill is and you'll likely draw a blank stare. Pickersgill, however, is not very different than Bond, except that he was a real spy, and a hero, a Torontonian and didn't sport the same kind of Bond bling. Frank fought for our country, during World War II, as part of a unique group called the SOE - Special Operations Executive - initiated by Winston Churchill.

To train this elite force Camp X was created, close to the shores of Whitby, Ontario. It was at this spy school, the largest in North America, that Canadian, American and English men and women were taught how to transmit messages secretly, kill silently, and how to handle interrogation if captured.

Ian Fleming was part of the spy school at Camp X, but space was limited so he was living on Avenue Road in Toronto and travelling to the school when necessary. It was while while living here in Toronto that the author penned his first book Casino Royale and named the character James Bond from a nearby church.

Fleming went onto great fame and success but not all of his comrades at Camp X were so lucky. Pickersgill was captured, and interrogated, on a couple different occasions. The first time he broke out by sawing out his cell window, using a blade baked into a loaf of bread. Years later, the Canadian spy parachuted into enemy-occupied France. Fellow SOE members drove into the Loire Valley to find him but all were intercepted and Pickersgill was taken back to prison. This time his escape through a second floor window didn't end successfully. He was recaptured and later executed. A garden is dedicated in his honour on UofT's campus.

It's not the ending fellow Camp X alum Ian Fleming, creator of agent 007, would have written but it's a story that deserves to be told out of respect to those who helped gain our freedom.

If Fleming were aiming for authenticity it may've been with a Canadian accent that we would hear the famous spy's introduction: "Bond, James Bond" and Canadians would realize that their biggest heroes are not Hollywood-born.

I've been having a bit more fun rating restaurants in Toronto on Restaurantica. My favourite place out there is Czehoski. It's a great place to meet friends for drinks in summer or winter. Menu is small but there's a great selection of drinks, even organic wines.

It was my top pick too when I wrote a piece last fall for Variety magazine. New Yorkers (Gotham edition) could get a quick look at the best places to hit in Toronto for nightlife when visiting during the Toronto International Film Festival.

At the time I sat down for an informal interview with the Manager of Czehoski; he revealed great stories about the former mob hangout and butcher shop, remnants of which are immediately obvious when walking through the door. On the second floor it's another world entirely, small intimate areas make up the space.

I found a new resto in the Junction. One of those I'd always meant to try. I'm not much of a pub girl, the menus always seem the same and the places always smell too greasy. Back to the Garden is a few steps up, it's cozy like a pub but the menu changes often and has a wide variety of delicious bits for every type of foodie.

My bf likes their burgers so we just gave them a ring since he wanted to go pick it up. In my search for their number i came across a cool new website called Restaurantica where visitors to the site can take a 1-10 vote on the food and service. Back to the Garden was already rated a 9 out of 10, but I still felt like I should add my own restaurant review.

Spa Day Holiday at Body Blitz

Few of us ever take the time to indulge in a nice long bath let alone with a group of close friends, so I welcomed the opportunity when I got an email telling me to come to Body Blitz for a day of girlfriend fun at the ladies-only water spa. The spa had opened over a year ago in a converted old brick industrial building on Adelaide West at Portland and had generated a serious amount of buzz since it was the only one of its kind in Canada. I'd given several friends gift certificates to Body Blitz since I thought it would be a fantastic present but hadn't gone to check it out yet myself.

Staff greeted my friends and I by taking tea orders then leading us through the spa with recommendations on how to get the most from our day in the therapeutic waters. We were to follow a circuit through warm, hot and cold pools filled with fresh and salt water, as well as one with green tea. In between we could hop into a lush steam room and sauna or hang out poolside on comfy leather loungers.

We lingered for hours, moving around the giant pool divided up by a stonewall with salt water waterfall. All around we were surrounded by natural elements of rock, wood and subtle lighting. Although it's all indoors, the illusion of being in nature is fulfilled. It's the best way I can think of to feel like you're getting away while still being in the city - no need to travel several hours to dip your feet in salt water when you can find it right here in Toronto.

Post bath time several friends indulged further with massages, body scrubs and mud treatments. Had I known that the price (about 40 dollars) for "the waters" was included in any one of the treatments I would've slipped away for some shiatsu. Instead I did a few more circuits soaking up the benefits of the different pools and then kicked back all wrapped up in a toasty bathrobe. It's one of the best days I've spent in awhile and a great way to unwind after the holiday.

A Royal Reopening

It was a horrible day in Toronto when we learned we'd potentially be losing three of our historic rep theatres. That was back in June. I'm still lamenting the day the Runnymede Theatre became a Chapters bookstore and that was 8 years ago. It could've been worse. Though it's not a theatre anymore, it still hangs onto some of the same old school charm it had back in the day when I had a date with my first teen crush there. Some of the cinema seating remains too, for those who want to cozy up with a book and forego the awkward handholding.

My memories of the Uptown theatre were demolished three years back and I pass The Revue on Roncesvalles wondering when someone will see its potential and bring it back to life. Local businesses and residents campaigned, raising $30,000 to save it from an unknown fate, but it still needs a buyer with a big heart. Further down Roncesvalles, the Brighton Theatre became a large convenience store years ago, but its classic signage was just recently removed.

Despite some of the losses and some of the change, there is good news on the street. The Royal on College reopened last Friday with a door toward the future of cinema. It'll feature high-definition projection, top-notch sound systems and Avid editing facilities. Theatre D Digital, a Toronto post-house credited with mixing Rub & Tug and Phil the Alien, has taken over the property with the intention of restoring the theatre to its former glory days, back when they called it the Pylon. They'll cut and mix projects in one of four suites during daytime hours and feature Canadian and International film on screen in the evenings.

Top of TO: Design Shops

For those who get totally stressed Christmas shopping I have one piece of advice - go local and stay out of the malls. Over the course of two rainy days I've found nearly everything I need in Bloor West, Parkdale and West Queen West, granted I've been buying for people who love design as much as I do and it's always easier to find unique gifts away from the dreaded mall.

Relatively new to the block is blue igloo in Parkdale, a small shop with a bit of everything for the home. Every time I go in I leave with something for my flat, but this time the silver teardrop lamp I picked up had someone else's name on it. At Jolanta Interiors on Bloor every kitchen accessory you could dream up is somewhere on its shelves. Smallish brandy glasses were a nightmare to find anywhere else - they were out, too pricey or not the right shape - but they were a quick find at this established shop in the village. Wish I'd bought the ramekins for creme brulee for $1.50 a piece at Jolanta's instead of at Williams Sonoma at $11 a pop, though WS did wrap them up extra pretty.

Of all the places I'd been Studio Brillantine at Dovercourt and Queen is my fav. Whenever I'm lost for gift ideas SB is where I end up. I spent an hour looking at every piece in the store - Stelton's stainless steel coffee set by Arne Jacobsen, Shiseido candies from Ginza, Toyko and minimal digital watches by Philippe Stark. It's the kind of stuff that wins design awards and gets noticed - conversation pieces - the kind of pieces people usually don't buy for themselves but would love to own and probably don't already have. I left with a great bag of goodies, easily finding something for the home-office guy, the entertainer and the traveler too all in one simple spot.

blogTO reported this morning that someone could be missing out on a chance to claim $355,000 in winnings from Lotto 6/49. The lottery ticket was sold in South Western Ontario last year but has yet to be claimed. The deadline to claim the cash is 5:00 p.m. on Thursday, January 4, 2007. I could rifle through all the drawers in my house or just pull the ones off the fridge my man's been waiting to claim. Maybe we can have our dream vacation after all.

Toronto's Dark Side

As much as I love Toronto's shiny side I also love it for its dark corners too. I scoured my flickr photography group fourONEsixSTYLE looking for stills to share with you. This one, as the last skyline shot taken from high above the clouds on a passenger plane, shows an angle of this city I've never seen before and reveals a futuristic looking city. Toronto, the Gotham City of the Future? Maybe not, we're still a clean, green city for the most part, but when that ubiquitous fog rolls in does make me think there might be a little madness stirring under the fog's heavy veil.

Rebranding fourONEsixSTYLE

When I started this blog over a year ago I was given a handful of templates to choose from created by Blogger, and because it was a Sunday afternoon whim I chose this one.

However, the site has evolved and it may be time for the branding to evolve too. I appreciate all you loyal blog readers stopping by fourONEsixSTYLE and think you deserve a bit more eye-candy. Problem is Blogger doesn't let you change the template unless you're willing to part with all your content - and I'm not. I do have some solutions up my sleeve so stay tuned and tell me what you think of the simple design I whipped together for you.

Who Represents Ward 14?

I'm usually way ahead of the game when it comes to federal and provincial elections but in this municipal vote I'm still trying to make up my mind. Cruising on the web today led me to Spacing's great site, which pointed me to a list of candidates for City Councilor at whorunsthistown.to. Since there are links to most of the candidates sites I've been checking out their stand on the issues. Strangely everyone in Ward 14 - Parkdale High Park - seems to be saying the same thing: protect our neighborhood - from pollution, traffic, crime and intensification.

Personally, I'd like to see Wabash Community Centre built from the derelict industrial building that now sits on the edge of Wabash park - architect and candidate David White is the only one who's been involved. I'd like the waterfront cleaned up. I'd like our trees to be given more importance than parking spots. However, I don't think we're ready to tear down the Gardiner and I don't think I'd like the Front Street Extension. As far as energy concerns, I love our wind turbine but think we should incinerate our garbage to create energy as they do in Copenhagen, Denmark. Just heard Mayor David Miller's opposition to incineration is based on figures from 35 year old technology, he just realized. After all the reports I've read I probably know more about it than our mayor. So that's where I stand, but how about our candidates? Who do you want to represent Ward 14?

The best candidate breakdown I've seen comes from Parkdale High Park candidate himself Anthony Quinn. It's hilarious and unabashedly stolen from his blog word for word below:

Beverly Bernardo:

She’s a Communist who lists her political hero as Lenin. Note to Beverly, he slaughtered hundreds of thousand of people. That aside she has no interest in local politics, but rather class struggle, unions and imperialist forces. Vote for Beverly if you are a Communist. And if you are a Communist, remember that they don’t vote in Communist countries.

John Colautti:

John seems like a nice guy. He worked for the out going Councillor Watson. I’ve listened to John and read his material, but I still don’t know what he means or what he stands for. If you vote for John, you’ll likely get more of that.

Tom Freeman:

Tom is another nice guy. He’s a multi-millionaire; at least he recently purchased a multi-million dollar home in a fancier part of town than Ward 14. He runs a restaurant on Roncesvalles that takes in at risk youth for job training. My pal who works at Covenant House vouches for the program. Tom wants to plant trees and beautify Roncesvalles Ave. Vote for Tom if you have a stake in a Rocesvalles Ave. business.

David Hanna:

David speaks softly and knows about architecture and planning. That’s about it for David.

Barry Hubick:

Slightly odd, but genuine in his concern for Toronto. Says if we take care of the little things, like crosswalks and litter, the big things will take care of themselves. Barry does not want to be City Councillor; he actually said, “don’t vote for me” at an all candidates meeting, so I suggest you don’t.

Walt Jarsky:

Member of the NDP party. A gentleman, with a New York accent. Vote for Walt if you want the best of the many NDP candidates to represent you at City Hall.

Ted Lojko:

Ted is a perennial candidate for election in the neighbourhood, having previously been an unsuccessful Liberal candidate. He’s worked as a community planner and non-profit housing developer. Vote for Ted if you want an old-school politician representing you at City Hall.

Gord Perks:

Gord is a militant, environmental activist and paid political lobbyist. Vote for Gord if all you care about is environmentalism, because that’s all he cares about, as it has been the focus of his entire adult life and he’s not about to change. Don’t vote for Gord if you believe in capitalism and enjoy the freedom of driving a a car.

Rowena Santos:

Rowena is a well educated 28 year old. She’s another NDP candidate, who wants to raise your taxes to spend on social programs. Vote for Rowena if you think City Council needs a replacement for Olivia Chow.

Dilorece South:

Dilorece is a Parkdale business owner who wants to fight crime promote multiculturalism and improve the business environment in Parkdale. She does not live in the area, but spends most of her waking hours in the neighbourhood. She’s a nice woman. Vote for Dilorece if you have a stake in a Parkdale business.

Jimmy Talpa:

Jimmy has been rude and disruptive at the all candidates meetings, and would likely do the same in City Council. He’s a Toronto sports fan and a “character” of our City. Don’t vote for Jimmy unless you’re related to him.

Matthew Vezina:

Matthew Vezina is a litigious court reporter. He has a good speaking voice and is adamant in his opinions. I think you’d have to meet Matthew in person before deciding to vote for him or not.

David White:

David is the least palatable member of the NDP contingent in Ward 14. He’s a former City and Metro Councillor who wants another kick at the can. Vote for David if you believe in recycling – politicians.
